Bypass tools are simple, elegant and often very fast methods for opening locks. In almost all cases you are not attacking the pins of the lock but the inner and outer workings of the lock. In many cases it is often easier to go after the door latch with a Jim tool than it is to pick the lock open. This is where bypass tools come in handy.
What are Jim Tools?
A jim tool will open what is locked by live latches. These are latches that still move in and out even when the door is locked. Perhaps you have seen a movie where someone opens a lock with a credit card. Jim tools replace the plastic credit card with cold rolled steel. Often for fire code reasons internal office and school locks need to be live latches.
How do Lock Picking Bypass Tools Work?
Bypass tools fall into two categories: lock specific and nonspecific. Our Abus driver is a lock specific bypass. The tool is really designed to work on a few locks. Our Jim tools are non specific and will work on a much wider range of locks and are not specific to a single manufacturer. But in all cases they exploit a manufacturing flaw and gain access to an area that allows the tool to open the lock. In almost all cases the use of bypass tools is much faster than trying to pick open the lock. One very interesting method of bypassing a lock is using comb picks. These act like a key but lift the pins in such a way that they push them all over the sheer line inside the lock letting you turn it open. Almost all locksmiths will carry bypass tools and almost every fire department will have access. Jim tools often also call shove knives because they are so effective.
